What is LiteClub?
A completely free service for community sports clubs to save money by becoming more efficient with electricity, water and waste.
Why does it exist?
By being smarter about using electricity and water, and sending less waste to landfill, you save money by reducing bills and improve environmental impact at the same time by being more careful with our valuable resources. It doesn’t happen often in sport, but this is a win-win situation.
With our LiteClub programme, we want to illustrate how simple changes can have a noticeable impact and encourage all members to make these changes at their own homes too. If all of us do a little, together we can achieve a lot.
Who runs LiteClub?
LiteClub was co-founded by Hamish Reid and pro-Golfer Michael Campbell in 2008. The trust is lead by 11 ambassadors that have made changes in their own lives and are competing against each other to see who can reduce costs and environmental impact the most. How is it free?
We receive nationwide funding from a number of gaming trusts, including The Lion Foundation and New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT), as well as The Southern Trust. This is supplemented by support from numerous local organisations, e.g. Auckland Council, Rata Foundation or Otago Community Trust and philanthropists. So how does it work?
Once you register online, our team will be in touch to confirm your registration and to let you know when we will be in your region next. About three weeks before the actual visit, you will get another email with a visit suggestion specifically for your club. While in some regions we have a bit of flexibility around timing, in other places we only visit 1 or 2 clubs and are therefore quite restricted with our time. Generally, if you have a preferred time between 9 am to 5 pm on a weekday please do let us know and we will try our best to work it into our schedule.
A day before the visit, we send a visit reminder via text message, so please provide your mobile number upon registration if you have one. On the day, they will make some immediate changes at the club like upgrading lightbulbs, insulating hot water cylinders and pipes, installing refrigeration timers and water saving devices on taps, toilets, and shower, and setting up indoor recycling bins. In addition, our Sustainability Advisers take notes to write a report after the visit that outlines some larger ideas to improve efficiency at the club. You can expect your club’s report about 2 – 3 weeks after the initial visit to your facilities.
How long has it been going?
LiteClub was launched in 2011. In 2014, we expanded the service to include South Island clubs as well. Check our LiteClub page to find out how many clubs we have visited to date.
How much of my time will it take up?
The LiteClub field team spend between 1 – 3 hours at the clubrooms of each club, depending on the size of the building(s) and how many on-the-spot changes they can make. They work independently, but will need to ask a few questions and have a tour of the club at the start, and then talk you through the results of the visit at the end. It is no problem for you to leave in between and our team will give you a ring shortly before they finish up.
Do I need to bring anything?
Just two things: a recent electricity bill and a bill from the waste contractor, if the club has one. The contract that the club signed with their waste contractor is also fine. Lastly, please ensure that LiteClub can access all rooms in the club, in order to make the most changes possible.

What if I only want some of your bins for my club?
If you aren’t interested in a full club visit, but would like some help with recycling right at your facility, please get in touch to find out if we can provide any (funding dependent).
We’ve misplaced our post-visit report, can we receive a copy?
Absolutely. If you don’t know where you’ve saved your report, if management has changed since the visit, or you would like a digital copy because your original report was printed simply flick us an email and we will get it to you asap.
We already participated in the LiteClub programme once, can we receive a second visit?
From April 2019 onwards, we are offering revisits to clubs that were originally visited before 2016, as we now stock LED lights, shower flow restrictors, and refrigeration timers, all of which we couldn’t offer to your club at the time. Feel free to fill out our registration form if you think your club could benefit from a second visit.
